Investigation into attempts to lure a child online leads to charges against an Oshawa man

A 60-year-old Oshawa man has been arrested in connection with an investigation into child pornography and attempts to allegedly lure a 12-year-old girl into performing sexual acts.

Members of the Durham Regional Police Child Exploitation Unit (ICE) launched an investigation after receiving information on June 2, 2024 that a man had sent explicit photos to what he believed to be a 12-year-old girl using the social media platform “Meet24” under the username “Robert.”

“The suspect attempted to arrange a meeting with the female so they could engage in sexual acts,” investigators said.

Durham Police are expected to arrest a 60-year-old Oshawa man at his residence on Wednesday (July 10).

The man has been charged with:

  • Possession of child pornography
  • Making child pornography available
  • Making sexually explicit material available to a person under the age of 18
  • Making sexually explicit material available to a person under the age of 16
  • Trapping a person under 16 years of age to facilitate a sexual assault
  • Luring a person under the age of 16 to facilitate sexual interference
  • Trapping for the purpose of making child pornography

The 60-year-old man was detained pending a bail hearing.

Police believe there may be other victims.
